What is on this planet “Earth” that a healthy diet cannot do? A healthy and nutritious diet along with some little lifestyle adjustments can do wonders. A healthy diet and lifestyle is the first and foremost advice of any physician in case of any kind of harm to the individual’s wellbeing.
According to a study, a healthy diet may influence the likelihood of hearing impairments among people especially women. About 48 million Americans are reported to suffer from hearing loss.
The researchers have examined some specific ingredients that could possibly influence the rate of hearing loss among people. However, the basic connection between diet and hearing loss has still not been explored.
The researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) evaluated three different diets in this regard which included,
- The Alternate Mediterranean diet (AMED)
- The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH)
- The Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010).
The AMED diet includes the consumption of extra virgin olive oil, fish, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, and vegetables, and moderate alcohol consumption. The DASH diet involves the consumption of a lot of fruits and vegetables, low- sodium and low-fat dairy products. The AHEI-2010 diet has parallel components to the AMED and DASH diet.
About 70,966 women took part in this analytical study which continued for about 22 years. The researchers evaluated the dietary intake of the participants after every four years.
The results of the study revealed that following a healthy diet may possibly reduce the risks of acquired hearing loss especially, in women. The participants following diets similar to the AMED or DASH showed a 30 percent lower chance of developing hearing loss.
Dr. Sharon Curhan was the first author of the study who stated that as per the data collected after the observations, the individuals who followed an overall healthy diet exhibited a lower risk of moderate or worse hearing loss. Dr. Curhan is an epidemiologist in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at BWH. For the study, assessment of hearing loss was based on self-reports. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Nutrition.

- Potassium can help prevent age-related and noise-related hearing loss. Apricots, bananas, melons, oranges, and spinach are the potent sources of potassium.

Food like asparagus, avocado, beans, broccoli, leafy greens like spinach, and lentils can provide us with this necessary ingredient.
- A deficiency in vitamin B12 can cause hearing loss. Vitamin B12 can be found in organic products and is created in the intestines by “good” bacteria. Sources include nori (an edible seaweed) and spirulina (blue-green algae).
- Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that prevent free radical damage to cells in the body. Vitamin E stocks up blood vessels and nerves around the ear. Meanwhile, vitamin C supports the immune function to avoid ear infections. Food rich in both vitamins C and E include broccoli, kiwi, papaya, and red bell peppers.
- Vitamin D is vital for various aspects of health. It aids bone formation and weight control. It is anti-inflammatory in nature and can strengthen the tiny bones in the ear. Sources of vitamin D include sunlight, lichens, micro-algae, and mushrooms.
- Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant and enzyme facilitator. Alpha-lipoic acid protects hearing from free-radical damage. In addition, it boosts the nervous system functioning and helps the production of mitochondria in the hair cells of the inner ear. Broccoli, spinach, and sweet potatoes are possible sources of ALA.
