In today world, every age group faces different health problems. As a person grows older, there are more challenges to maintain health. One of the biggest among them is cognitive decline. Hence, more and more scientists are studying the issue.
The decline in cognition is a natural part of aging. Over time, a person’s senses do not remain as sharp as they just were and he or she becomes slower. However, this does not mean that a person becomes totally unable to perform even basic everyday tasks.
Rapid cognitive decline is usually the sign of a related disease. This can be any form of dementia. According to the statistics, the most common condition that falls under the dementia umbrella is Alzheimer’s diseases.
Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly spreading in the United States as well as globally. The medical literature on the problem shows that there are multiple factors that cause the development of dementia.
On the other hand, there are also a number of ways to prevent major cognitive decline. This includes the basic guidelines on staying healthy such as a good diet and exercise. In addition, studies also show many other things that may help in keeping cognition steady.
For instance, new research shows that continuing the use of computers may help prevent mild cognitive impairment. The study appears in the journal Neurology by the American Academy of Neurology.
Technology Stops Cognitive Decline
Since conditions related to cognition are increasing, further on the subject was needed. Previous studies show that activities that can mentally stimulate a person may prevent cognitive decline. The new study explores further on this take.
For this purpose, the researchers recruited around two thousand adults. All of these participants were age seventy or above and none of them had a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment.
After the recruitment, the participants had to fill out a questionnaire on any mentally stimulating activities in their life. This included activities they were a part of in the last two decades as well as the current ones.
In addition, the participants also had to give different cognitive tests such as memory tests from time to time. The study period was approximately five years along. During this time, around 532 of the participants started showing signs of mild cognitive impairment.
The researchers specifically noted that only fifteen of the total participants used a computer in the last two decades. Seventy-seven of them still used a computer for different activities. All of these participants did not have cognitive impairment.
After the observation, the researchers concluded that computers did help in the prevention of cognitive decline. In fact, each one of the activities was beneficial in a different way. For instance, playing games such as crossword lowered risk of decline in cognition by twenty percent.
Secondly, socializing, crafty games, and the use of the computer, in general, cut down chances of mild cognitive impairment. Overall, doing four or five of such activities lowered the risk by more than half.
According to the researchers, this shows how important it is to keep the mind working during aging. More mentally stimulating activities means there are fewer chances of reduced cognitive abilities.
