So, a new study also looks at diet as a possible risk factor for drug-resistant bacteria. The research was a collaboration between different centers. This includes the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. Its findings appear in the journal Nature Genetics.
High Sugar Diets Raise Risk Of Drug-resistant Bacteria In Hospitals
The rise of drug-resistant bacteria is one of the biggest threats to public health. This is because it can possibly hint the evolution in bacteria which were controlled previously. Furthermore, this means that health conditions which are now considered easy to treat can become deadly once again.
Combined with the new age challenges, this comeback can destroy all of the advancements of the health industry. Therefore, research on it is fundamental at the moment. In the new study, the researchers look specifically at the bacteria Clostridioides difficile.
The bacteria typically impacts people in hospitals who have had treatments for their gut bacteria balance. Most of the hospital-borne infections are the result of a C. diff attack. According to stats from the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the bacteria was responsible for fifty thousand infections last year.
Additionally, the reports from the CDC state that it is also causing deaths as the bacteria is becoming resistant to drugs. So, the researchers in the new study did a sequence and comparison of around nine hundred and six DNA strains of this bacteria. These strains came from different surroundings, animals, and humans.
After analyzing the DNA, it was confirmed that one out of the two species of the bacteria was becoming resistant. It was revolving to survive especially in hospital environments and infect people. Moreover, it was also noted that this species made the majority of the samples that came from humans.
The last but most important discovery was that there was a change in genes that control metabolism in the bacteria. According to the researchers, it may mean that are likely to survive better in people with poor diets rich in sugars.
Statistically, sugar forms the majority of the modern-day diets. This study shows yet another issue with unhealthy diets of today. Hence, there is a need for change and awareness regarding diets than ever before.
