Dietary Interventions May Help With Cancer Risk

With passing time, there are more and more challenges for public health. Researchers from around the world are focusing on figuring out the complicated risk factors in such threats. However, some of them remain to be a big problem even in developed areas. One of them is a cancer risk.

Statistically, there are a number of diseases that are responsible for the highest number of deaths worldwide. More recently, health professionals have stated that many of these are interconnected. This means that one may lead to another.

Furthermore, this also hints at a potentially difficult path to a complete cure. For instance, treating diabetes and heart disease in an obese person can be rather complicated. Not only would the person require several therapies but would need to make major lifestyle changes.

However, in the case of cancer, developments and risk factors are even harder to understand. Cancer risk raises due to genetic or environmental reasons but in some cases, there may be no reason at all. In addition, different forms of this disease require different therapies.

This is why researchers accentuate the rule of prevention before treatment especially in case of cancer risk. Therefore, there is an increase in studies based on cancer. For example, a new study highlights how some very trivial changes in the daily intake can help in cancer prevention.

Researchers from the Edith Cowan University in Australia specifically focus on polyphenols called flavonoids in the new study. The findings of the study appear in the journal Nature Communication.

500 Milligrams Of Flavonoids Cut Down Risk Of Cancer

Research from the past on diet and fitness shows that it is mandatory to consume fruits and vegetables for good health. In addition, many studies also highlight the fundamental role of diet in both prevention and treatment of a specific health condition.

This is why doctors and health professionals always suggest making lifestyle and dietary changes to patients. Secondly, many also encourage the patients to continue these habits even after treatment. The researchers in the new study show how very little changes can have great effects. This includes lowering cancer risk.

Generally, scientists are aware of the benefits of fruits and vegetables but the main source is unknown. Researchers in the new study suggest it is mainly the flavonoids that are responsible for the advantages.

Flavonoids are originally a type of chemicals which are also called polyphenols. These are present in a variety of foods including tea, green vegetables, fruits, and even dark chocolate. Previous studies show their multiple benefits including decreasing risk of cancer.

However, there are not many details on cancer and flavonoids. In order to know more, researchers took data from the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort. Approximately, the data was from 56,048 people out of which 14,083 died in the twenty-three years period of the study.

After the examination of data and follow-ups, the researchers saw people who consumed 500 milligrams of flavonoids had a lower risk of cancer. In comparison, other people had a much higher risk. Secondly, it was also noticed that people these participants also had a lower risk of heart disease.

Furthermore, these results apply to the consumption of all six subclasses of flavonoids. The researchers suggest that this shows yet another reason to maintain a healthy diet.
