Researchers from the Edith Cowan University in Australia specifically focus on polyphenols called flavonoids in the new study. The findings of the study appear in the journal Nature Communication.

The researchers in the new study show how very little changes can have great effects. This includes lowering cancer risk.
Generally, scientists are aware of the benefits of fruits and vegetables but the main source is unknown. Researchers in the new study suggest it is mainly the flavonoids that are responsible for the advantages.
Flavonoids are originally a type of chemicals which are also called polyphenols. These are present in a variety of foods including tea, green vegetables, fruits, and even dark chocolate. Previous studies show their multiple benefits including decreasing risk of cancer.
However, there are not many details on cancer and flavonoids. In order to know more, researchers took data from the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort. Approximately, the data was from 56,048 people out of which 14,083 died in the twenty-three years period of the study.
After the examination of data and follow-ups, the researchers saw people who consumed 500 milligrams of flavonoids had a lower risk of cancer. In comparison, other people had a much higher risk. Secondly, it was also noticed that people these participants also had a lower risk of heart disease.
Furthermore, these results apply to the consumption of all six subclasses of flavonoids. The researchers suggest that this shows yet another reason to maintain a healthy diet.
