Physical Activity May Cut Down Mortality Risk In Adults

Awareness today regarding health and fitness is more than ever. The majority of people now try to adopt healthy habits for a better lifestyle. Consequently, the benefits of physical activity are also common knowledge now. Therefore, every other person is now going to the gym or taking a fitness class.

According to research from the past, exercise affects the body in many different ways. Many people involve any kind of physical activity in their routines for weight loss or maintenance. In order to stay fit and away from extra pounds, exercise is mandatory.

In addition to advantages for weight, such activities are also good for health overall. Not only can they improve physical health but mental health as well. Some studies also show that daily exercise reduces the risk of many diseases.

For instance, research shows that even the risk of multiple cancers is reduced by exercising on a daily basis. Therefore, scientists are looking for other potential benefits and impacts of physical activity as well. One area of effects of exercise looks at its link with mortality.

Previous research shows exercise may result in a longer lifespan. A new analysis explores further on this link by viewing different studies and data present on the subject. The conclusion of this analysis appears in the journal BMJ.

What Was the Research Method?

Health professionals and doctors from around the world suggest at least forty-five minutes of exercise daily. An active lifestyle such as this can prevent many of the diseases. This includes those which are the leading causes of death worldwide.

However, many of the previous studies supporting this use only self-reported data. On the other hand, the new study confirms these findings using a different way. In accordance with the researchers in the analysis, their findings are distinct because of the use of accelerometers.

Accelerometers are small, wearable devices. Not only can these devices measure the amount but the intensity of a person’s workout.

The team in the study looks at three main things. The first one is how exercise really affects the longevity of a person. In addition to this, it provides information on how the variable intensity makes a difference. Lastly, it clarifies how sitting for too long can impact health.

To do so, the researchers did an examination of data from around 36,383 participants. These participants were mainly around the 40-64 years as the researchers wanted to look at all three mentioned factors in adults.

The main sources of the data were eight different studies. In these, the participants used accelerometers while working out for a period of one week. There were also follow up periods in all of the studies for 5.8 years.

The term ‘physical activity’ was not only for conventional exercise in the gym. These studies also include activities like walking, mowing the lawn, and vacuuming.

What Was the Result?

After examining the data, the researchers found that the intensity of exercise did not matter in longevity. Light, moderate, and vigorous exercise all were beneficial for health and increasing lifespan in adults

The most active of all people had around 60-70 percent lower risk of death in comparison with the least active. Secondly, another finding was people who sat for nine hours or longer in their routines had a higher risk of dying.

Conclusively, the study confirms that physical activity, regardless of its intensity, is good for health. On the contrary, a sedentary lifestyle and sitting all day can lead to health issues as well as death.
