Eating fish during pregnancy can promote healthier fetus growth: Study

When a woman is pregnant, she needs to keep a number of things in mind. Often that entails keeping a check on what’s eaten and what’s not. Arising from that concern is whether eating fish during pregnancy is a safe option?

We are well aware of the potential health benefits of fish, particularly the rich protein content that is available. While that might be the case, mothers will avoid eating fish during pregnancy simply because of the high mercury content. The issued FDA guidelines make one thing very clear: pregnant mothers in the US are simply not consuming enough fish and other seafood. Doing so is depriving them of several essential nutrients that could have been obtained otherwise.

That said, the questions subsequently arising are how much fish should be eaten and what type?

To understand that medical experts would recommend breaking down your seafood chart into different categories. It is always best to avoid fish (or other seafood) which contains a high level of mercury to avoid poisoning.

Additionally, it is vital that pregnant mothers should consider eating the type with protein and omega-3 fats.

Mackerel, seabass, sardines, and shrimps are good options to start with for their rich nutrient content. Choose to avoid marlin, shark, swordfish, and tuna.

The recommended daily amount for pregnant mother ranges between 7 to 12 ounces. The key thing to note is eating fish during pregnancy is completely safe as long as you choose the right diet. Yet, it is always best to consult your doctor for better and more comprehensive advice.

Fetus Growth and Fish

From what we know is that fish is a good addition to the diet of a pregnant mother. By providing with the required protein, omega-3 fat amount, it does a lot good to the body.

A pregnant mother needs protein in a sufficent amount to support cell growth and function for both herself and the baby. The nutrient becomes critically important during the third trimester when the cell growth is at the fastest.

On the other hand, eating fish during pregnancy will also provide with a good solid amount of Omega-3 fatty acid. Which itself is also vital for the various benefits to the baby. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are needed by pregnant women to support the cognitive development of the baby. A healthy amount will also ensure better vision.

But more importantly, the nutrient has also great usage in the production of breast milk after pregnancy. The breast milk containing Omega-3 is advantageous in the sense that it provides protection from allergies and infection.
