Alcohol-free Diet Boosts Mental Health In Women

Drinking alcohol is among the biggest debates of today’s time. There are divisions among the people as well as the health professionals. However, there is no exact conclusion to the argument. Some studies show that cutting down alcohol is beneficial. Other research gives a contrasting opinion.

Among the heavy drinkers and abstainers, there are also people who drink occasionally. There is also a lot of research present in such kind of drinking. Moderate drinking and occasional drinking does not pose the same threat as heavy drinking.

In fact, some studies show that it is better than people who abstain later in life. This is because abstinence after heavy drinking may cause reverse causation. However, research also states that total abstinence is better than any quantity of alcohol.

Recently, there is research on alcohol and its connection with health conditions. For instance, there are known links between drinking alcohol and mental health. Previously, there have been no studies on moderate drinking and mental conditions.

Now, a new study shows that cutting down even moderate drinking can be beneficial for mental health. It particularly focuses on women who drink occasionally or very lightly. In addition, leaving drinking can improve the general health of every person.

The study was by the researchers at Hong Kong University. Its findings appear in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

What Was the Research Methodology?

The FAMILY Cohort study is another research from Hong Kong University. It also looks at people’s drinking habits. So, in the new study, researchers incorporated data of 10,368 from this study.

All of these participants did not drink at all or in a very moderate quantity. Another group comprised of people who abstain now, regular drinkers, and new drinkers.

In this study, researchers call men who drink fourteen and women who drink seven or fewer drinks per week as light drinkers. Fifty-six percent of participants were women and the rest were men.

The average age of these participants was forty-nine years. Sixty-four percent of male participants were abstainers and eighty-eight percent of the women as well.

The researchers took an examination of the mental health of the participants and alcohol consumption. Secondly, more data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions was also used. This means there was data from an additional 31,079 people separately.

In both of the separate study data, there was an examination of the participants every four years. In total, there was one initial observation and a follow-up one.

What Was the Result?

The first thing that came under observation was the advantages of lifetime abstaining. Participants qualifying as abstainers had the highest number of benefits for mental health. Similarly, leaving drinking alcohol later was also beneficial.

The researchers specifically noted that women who left drinking had significant improvements in their mental health. Counting other factors such as level of education and social class did not have any effects on the findings.

Conclusively, it suggests that cutting down drinking alcohol can be even better than moderate drinking. This is especially important since there is a rise in mental issues across the globe.
