Recent research reveals that women with an excess of abdominal fat are likely to develop lung and bowel cancer. The study states that extra tummy fat stimulates increased insulin production, disrupting the corporal hormonal balance. Also, it triggers chronic inflammation and both conditions promote cancer or tumor production.
Women, especially after menopause, experience a shift of body fat towards their abdomen. This higher level of abdominal adiposity mediates obesity-related cancer risk. The study involved around 5,855 postmenopausal women with an average age of 71. They had their body fat scanned and were classified as having high or low abdominal fat ratios. Further, they had additional scans over a 12-year period. Their cancer status was determined by assessing their medical records.
The results of the analysis were presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology. The findings of the study showed that women, carrying excess fat around their abdomens, were at greater risks of developing cancer. They had more than 50 percent chance of having lung or gastrointestinal cancers, affecting the bowel. On the other hand, body mass index and fat percentage, however; were not linked to a heightened tumor risk.

Diabetes drug such as metformin lowers insulin effects thus it may contribute to the prevention of cancer.
