Is Type 2 Diabetes a reversible disease? This question is commonly asked by patients suffering from this condition.

We are told that it is a chronic and progressive disorder. Meaning by, that once you develop Type 2 diabetes, you are going to have it your entire life. Which is a wider scheme of things, mean that there is possibly nothing you can do about it.

People on type 2 diabetes are prescribed medications or insulin to control blood sugar level. However, there are other complications you are still at risk of including blindness, heart attack etc.

Imagine a world where Type 2 diabetes is a simply reversible disorder!

Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery is also referred to as weight loss surgery or stomach sampling. What really happens is that surgeons simply take out your stomach and cut it into the size of a walnut. That means you can’t really eat excessively.

Because you are not eating a lot, you end up losing a lot of weight. The question, however, is, what really happens to diabetes?

A study was conducted and two groups of diabetic patients were chosen to participate. One group of people stayed on their medications as usual and ha best available medical therapy. The other group meanwhile underwent Bariatric Surgery.

For people who took medications along with the therapy, the results did not much change. They were really no better than they were when they first started.

However, results for people with diabetes who went through Bariatric Surgery were starkly different.

Within a matter of months, a visible difference in the blood sugar level was being noted. By the end of 12 months, most of the patients were off their medications and had retained a normal blood sugar level.

It looks like diabetes is a disease that is reversible. To put in a more straightforward way, it is in fact quickly reversible.

Even for other types of weight loss surgeries like gastric banding have almost the same benefits for people with diabetes. Gastric banding is a procedure where surgeons put a belt inside the patient’s stomach and tighten it to prevent overheating.

Again according to studies, this has proven to be effective in countering diabetes. Results show that people were able to retain a normal sugar level once they went through the procedure.

Bariatric Surgery or Gastric Blanding may not be the answer for everybody. It simply points to the fact that the issue is different than what is normally portrayed to be.

Certainly, Type 2 diabetes have troubled a large number of patients. They try using prescribed medications along with a daily dosage of insulin. Yet they still feel they are at risk of a number of complications that can have consequences in the future.

What this really demands is to look out for alternatives that are accessible and easy to carry out.

Recent studies have shown that Bariatric Surgery may be one right option in that regard. It is about time that we will witness a revolutionary change in the field of endocrinology. For the time being, it is important to acknowledge the procedure as a way of reversing the effects of Type 2 Diabetes.
