Study finds most traditional common cold treatments to be ineffective

Although winter is nearing its end, doesn’t mean your child can’t catch a cold. In fact, the peculiarity of the weather makes children more vulnerable to illnesses. That’s because a slightly warmer day makes you want to wear lighter clothes. However, on the opposite side, it’s still cold enough for any infection to attack you or your child.

For obvious reasons, you do not want to see your child falling ill. No sane parents would want that. Whenever you find your son or a daughter feeling unwell in winters, you would suspect he/she to be suffering from a common cold. Subsequently, you will take measures in order to deal with the problem in the most meaningful way possible.

However, new research studies have something to say in that regard. According to recent findings, most preventive measures adopted by US parents for treating cold prove to be ineffective. They have little basis in science and in one way or the other do not yield any positive results.

Current Treatment for Cold

The new study aimed at investigating current treatment methods adopted by US parents. The results revealed turned out to be surprising for the researchers who have called for a cause of concern. It was found that 51% of the parents will tend to treat the condition with either a Vitamin or any other available supplement. Surprisingly, in most cases, they were not even aware of which Vitamin to use.

Why is that a problem because in not all scenarios, vitamins tend to work. In a lot of circumstances, they may not yield any meaningful result(s).

On the other hand, 71% of the parents would also rely on some traditional advice given to them by someone. For example, not letting the children go out when they have a cold, make them wear warmer clothes etc. While this may prevent the illness from intensifying, it is not a solution to it. Unfortunately like with the case with vitamins, some measures may also prove to be redundant.

Lastly, 87% of the parents also admitted on their own intuition. Say, if their child had a common cold, they would do what they feel is best. That entail keeping the sick away from other people, avoid hugging and kissing etc. Then again like with the previous preventive technique, the intuition method is not a proper solution to the problem. Rather it requires a more holistic approach.

What Can be Done About It?

There is a lot that can be done about the problem. Whenever your child is faced with the problem of a common cold, it is important to undertake some essential steps that will yield meaningful results.

Firstly, what is required is to avoid using traditional methods. As the research study has suggested, most of the adopted techniques are unlikely to do any good for the problem. What’s more important is to see a medical professional who specializes in a particular area. The advice of a doctor cannot be sidelined and it may not have any parallel(s).
