Americans are a lot fond of fast food. If that doesn’t sound believable, go out and take a visit to your neighbourhood. You will certainly come across a McDonalds or KFC. If not the either of the two then surely some other fast food chain. Either way, there is no denying that we tend to consume a lot of fried items.
If you have not stopped excessive consumption of such foods, then there is no better time. We all are increasingly aware of the health concerns that might tag along.
Now according to recent findings, a diet characterized by a lot of fast food items is likely to lessen the life span of a person. It increases the risk of severe complications including heart attack and stroke.
You may ask, that is something you already know. But there is something else to consider.
The risk is likely to be much higher for older people than any other age group. Particularly, post-menopausal women will reduce their lifespan by almost 8-10 years!
These figures are startling and need to be acknowledged.
Fast Food & Reduced Life Span
Medical experts have been increasingly worried about the entire situation. They have been alarmed by the massive increase in fast food consumers over the recent decade. Unfortunately, experts also strongly feel that the numbers can shoot up if no adequate measures are timely taken.
As a result, it is reasonable to infer that reducing the intake of deep fried items can have great health advantages.
In order to support the propositions, a group of scientists got together for a comprehensive observational study. The purpose was to investigate the consumption of fast food items. Subsequently, the researchers also considered the death rates of the individuals who had been following such a diet.
The questionnaire was first designed to count the number of consumers. About 107,000 people between the age 50-79 were asked about their dietary plans. Accordingly, they had to state the number of times they would visit a fast food chain outlet. In addition to that, participants were also asked about their preference for the fried items. The list included fried fish, chicken, shrimps, French fries and tacos.
Once the statistics were compiled, the next task was to document a relationship between fast food consumption and death rates.
The findings concluded that people who lived on a diet characterized by excessive fast food were much more likely to die earlier. Excessive was defined as consuming fried items thrice every week. The people had increased their risk of heart disease and stroke which ultimately cost the life of the person.
The results of the study should alert a number of US population who is extremely fond of fast food items. In fact, in another research, it was revealed that every third American ate deep fried items daily.
This should be a major cause of concern because the person is essentially reducing his/her life span.
Going out to such restaurants once in a while is fine and would not do any harm. The problem arises when this once in a life routine translates into excessive consumption of fast food items.
