“Male Birth Control Pill” will soon be available in the market

When we talk about male contraceptive methods, we generally mean condoms or vasectomy. That is because these are the most common preventive techniques available to men. With regards to females, birth control pills are frequently used to reduce the chances of pregnancy. However,  with recent advancements in medical science, we will now soon find “male pills” available in the market!

The birth control pill is specially designed to cater to the needs of men who are looking for alternatives to condoms or vasectomy. The drug has successfully passed the initial safety test. With few more examinations to undergo, we might have possibly the first ever birth control pill for men.

What is the “Male Birth Control Pill?”

The female birth control medication was introduced somewhat 50 years ago. It proved to be a groundbreaking discovery by reducing the chances of pregnancy by up to 99%. However, the pill was not designed to be taken by males. In fact, studies found that doing so could be consequential possibly leading to infertility.

However, the latest update has been issued by the researchers associated with LA BioMed and the University of Washington. The scientists carried out successful trials on what we would soon know as the “male contraceptive pill.”

It is designed to be a once-a-daily pill to act as alternatives to current birth control methods available for males. To know how the drug would essentially work is to focus on the procedure of sperm production. In normal circumstances, sperm cells are increasingly being synthesized in the testicles. This process is triggered by the secretion of certain hormones. The pill would temporarily lower the level of these hormones. The subsequent result would be halted sperm production.

The first stage of the examination considered the results of 40 male individuals. 30 took the birth control pills while the other 10 were subjected to a placebo effect. The experiment went on for a month before the results were underway.

According to the findings, the pill had positive results for the individuals who took it. They had lower hormone secretion which returned back to its normal level after a few days of the trial.

The Future Outlook

The results of the male birth control pill are no doubt promising. Scientists are more than optimistic about the drug who they feel will be marketed soon for the general public. There is a potential market for the drug and can practically change the way we perceive male contraception.

Yet there are few concerns raised that need to be accounted for. First and foremost, are the attached side effects of the pill. Although, held true for only 5 of the participants out of 30, should nevertheless be a cause of worry. The five individuals felt a reduction in their overall sexual drive. Further, two of them reported a mild case of erectile dysfunction.

For scientists, these concerns are not trivial at all. However, they feel that with certain modifications to the drug, the side effects can be catered. More importantly, on a larger scale, the success of the male birth control pill is able to overshadow its consequences.
