It was about time before authorities would do something about the danger posed by e-cigarettes. Just about a few months back, a man from Texas lost his life when the battery of the cigarette blew up. Consequently, the metal pieces pierced into his body eventually causing his death.
The news as unfortunate as it gets is not one of its kind. Sadly, we will continue to witness such stories if nothing is done about the problem!
Fortunately, San Francisco is soon going to be the first US city to take a preventive step in the right direction. The city health authorities have proposed a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes until the federal authority is done investigating the effects of the product.
That being said, the legislation to ban vapes is aimed to restrict the increased usage among teenagers. The young age group is far more likely to buy e-cigarettes than anyone else and sadly only a few are aware of the consequences.
The law has been welcomed by a number of people however there has been stark opposition from the youth members.
The ban on Sale of E-Cigarettes
In the US, no person below the age of 18 can purchase or consume any tobacco substance. This law has been applicable for years and was extended to include e-cigarettes when they first became popular. However, owing to recent incidents that have come up, San Francisco has moved one step ahead.
A complete ban on the sale of e-cigarettes will be applicable as early as possible. Previously, in August 2018, health authorities had issued a warning to companies to evaluate their products. With no proper success, the legislation towards implementing a ban was considered a much-needed one.
Proponents of the law argue that no citizen can entirely be free with combustible cigarettes. While the user themselves are at considerable risk, people around are in no way safe from the threat. At the same time, activists pushing the ban have focused their attention on teenagers. They feel that e-cigarettes companies are in one way or the other make vaping culture appear attractive. By offering different flavours at cheap prices, young people are more likely to be induced into buying.
The US Center for Disease and Control Prevention released some findings in that regard. According to the report that was published, just in one year, the teenage consumption of e-cigarettes rose by 1.3million in the US alone. It stood at 3.6 million users in 2017 which have climbed up to 4.9 million in 2018, a rise of 36%.
The Future Outlook
The ban on e-cigarettes is certainly one of its kind although with potential benefits for the community as a whole. San Francisco is currently the only US city to have taken this step. Nevertheless, it is believed that other cities will follow suit and push the health authorities to take similar action.
Long story short, there remains simply no denying in the increased consumption of e-cigarettes. The products are known to offer a different type of leisure compared to normal cigarettes. Yet, there is a risk attached to this additional fun.
