Flakka the “Zombie Drug”- What is it?

We have heard about the misuse of a number of drugs. People tend to abuse cocaine, heroin and in some cases, opioids. There is no denying in the fact that all of them are dangerous and can be fatal at times. Recently, there has been an addition to that list in the form of alpha-PVP. Commonly referred to as Flakka.

Although the current usage stands low compared to other known drugs yet there is a cause of worry. The figures are likely to go up if no action is taken by the authorities. Particularly, the misuse is likely to accelerate among the teenage population.

What needs to be realized is that Flakka is a seriously dangerous drug. It has the potential to cause severe health complications in the body. The rather unusual property is that the effects are in no way similar to those of cocaine or heroin.

What is Flakka?

Flakka is a synthetic cathinone compound that is characterized as a psychoactive stimulant.

Cathinone is what gives the drug its distinctive property. It has the ability to “excite” the individual along with causing severe forms of hallucinations. Due to these very qualities, people have ended up being in emergency rooms at hospitals.

If not that, then after taking a dose of Flakka, people are induced to inflicting harm on individuals. In official police reports, it was revealed that a number of homicides were linked with this very drug.

There is no one way of using it. People tend to ingest the crystals directly or will either inject them through a needle. In other cases, the crystals can also be snorted.

The US Flakka Crisis

It would not be wrong to assert that the US is currently facing its worst Flakka crisis. This is visible from the 80 deaths that were reported in December 2015 alone. While these are the official figures, a considerable portion of cases is never directed to the police.

In a study that was conducted, it was found that the usage has become very common among middle/high schools kids. Researchers were particularly worried about this increase and are investigating the possible reasons for the increase.

While the investigation is ongoing, two propositions that have been put forward are as follows.

  1. Flakka is a widely available street drug. It is not difficult for users to have access to it, unlike cocaine or meth. On the other hand, Flakka is also relatively cheaper than its counterparts. One packet will cost no more than $5 and can be used for a long period of time.
  2. The exciting property makes it a viable attraction for teenagers. Also known as the “Zombie Drug,” Flakka induces a strong feeling of excitement where the user feels excessively energetic. On further examinations, it was found that the drug leads to increased heart rate and aggression.

The takeaway from the above discussion is that Flakka is a considerably dangerous drug. People are using it excessively without realizing the possible consequences of it.

To add to the unfortunate side of the story, in many cases Flakka injuries are never properly traced. This is because the presence of the drug rarely shows up in medical examinations.
