The US government has finally stepped in with regards to the changes to the family planning program. Trump administration has submitted final changes to the Title X plan which ensures proper access to birth control facilities to the lower segment of the population.
The Anti Abortion Stance
The changes have been welcomed by the US conservative citizens. They feel that it is finally a step in the right direction and can prove to be groundbreaking. According to the plan, no one would be entitled to funding if the doctor has recommended abortion in any scenario. If any such reference is made then all STD and other reproductive coverage will be stopped.
It is important to note that abortion remains illegal in most US states. On a wider level, that means no funding by the federal government is also received.
The changes made to Title X will be applicable within the next 30 years. While the conservatives have welcomed the stance, others have expressed outrage. Primarily the whole abortion scenario has sparked a heated debate among the liberals.
The conservative lobby has been largely supported by the anti-abortion activists. They have long called to ban any funding that might be received for abortion procedures. For them, it is not part of family planning and therefore in all cases should be ruled out.
Opponents of Title X have argued that there should not be a line drawn between abortion and family planning. On the first level, they put forward the proposition that the procedure is necessary for some circumstances. Particularly, in the cases where the woman has been raped, abortion seems to be the only way out.
Secondly, whether a woman decides to abort the baby is her own choice that should be respected. Opposing bench to Title X henceforth argues that family planning funding should not be affected by the subsequent decision. Simply put, having access to cheap birth control methods is everybody’s right regardless of what beliefs they hold.
One other restriction that will be imposed through the plan is that doctors would not be allowed to discuss abortion proceedings with the patient. This will restrict them from openly discussing the issue with the patient. Doctors would have to consider other alternatives to abortion even if the latter seems to be the life-saving option.
This stance has received a considerable backlash from the medical community. They feel Title X through this clause deviates the doctor from his/her moral obligation. According to the oath, every doctor is obliged to tell the patient with all the possible solutions to the problem. Even if that includes getting an abortion done.
The changes in Title X have received multiple responses from people. For some people, the necessary amendments are in a positive light and need to be welcomed. This appreciation particularly coming from the conservative, pro-religion groups.
On the other hand, Title X was also not free from any criticism. Critics argued that the plan was a stab in the back for US citizens. Not only does it restrict the doctor’s moral obligation, but it also curtails the right of freedom of expression for women.
What finally is the outcome of the plan remains yet to be seen.
