Asian Women living in US at a higher risk of Breast Cancer

Asian women living in the US are more likely to be inflicted with Breast Cancer than any other immigrant population.

The USA has long been a hub for immigrants. People from around the globe will migrate from their original country to the US. The reasons may be several. From seeking a better job opportunity to higher levels of education. Either way, the country’s population consists not only of Americans but other immigrants as well.

The new study looked into the rates of Breast Cancer among different segments of the US population. It was found that Asian women were most likely to be the target compared to any other group. The risk of infliction stood about 2.5 times higher than any other racial segment.

More importantly, there was something else interesting to note as well. Asian women who had a greater risk of Breast Cancer were born in their original country but had spent half of their lives in the States. Compared to women who had Asian heritage and were actually born in the US.

Scientists are currently investigating why that may be the case. They have come up with their own explanations to support their claims.

Breast Cancer Risk in Asian Women

Researchers associated with the study were in fact surprised at the findings. Primarily because previous studies had contradicted the new results. Statistics from the early 2000s found that US women were more likely to be a victim of Breast Cancer. Regardless of what the racial origins might be, it was believed that the risk was greater.

There are a number of reasons scientists feel have led the numbers to plummet.

In the first case scenario, the Asian population have grown to be more economically viable. Their affordability rate has improved over time. Which essentially means that more women can afford to undergo Breast Cancer screenings. This may not explain why they got cancer in the first place. Nonetheless, it is able to refute what the previous studies had suggested.

One reason relates to the increased sedentary lifestyle Asian women follow nowadays. Only a small chunk of the population is physically active. In addition to that, these women are also deciding to have childbirth later in their lives. Coupled with decreased breastfeeding puts them at a greater risk of Breast Cancer.

Reducing the Risk

So far, we have been able to conclude that Asian women do stand at a higher chance of being diagnosed with Breast Cancer. A pertinent point to consider is the variation within the states. To put it this way, some states like California are likely to have more patients than other counterpart states. San Francisco had the most Breast Cancer Asian victims.

The next thing to think about it is what can be done about the problem.

Firstly, it is vital that these women have proper access to medical facilities that can treat Breast Cancer. That includes providing economic relief in the overall treatment of the condition. There are other non-medical measures that can be undertaken.

Second to that, it is also important that the Asian population is made aware of the rising rates. Without an innate realization, no meaningful measures will yield positive results.
