Scientists have found a remedial combination against atherosclerosis

The journal International Angiology published a study that reveals a combination effective enough to prevent atherosclerosis. The research states that French pine bark in combination with Gotu kola can potentially prevent atherosclerosis. Both of the natural compounds, when combined together, potentially remedy deadly heart plaque.

It is estimated that 610,000 US citizens die of heart diseases every year. Heart problems are one of the leading causes of death for both men and women in the country. The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease and is caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is actually the building up of plaque in the arteries.

This respective study suggests that French pine bark (Pinus pinaster) and Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) can help prevent such condition.

French pine bark and Gotu kola boost heart health

A group of volunteers aged between 45 and 60 were examined for the study. The researchers analyzed the effects of different medications, strategies, and supplements on the arteries of the subjects under observation. All of the participants were diagnosed as “class IV.” This meant that their arteries were constricted by plaque. However, the level of the plaque didn’t exceed 50 percent of the total area.

The participants were randomly divided into smaller groups as follow,

  1. One group only received diet and exercise recommendations
  2. Another was given Aspirin
  3. Some groups received pine bark or Gotu kola alone
  4. One of the groups was given both compounds at the same time

After three months of the study, the diet-and-exercise group demonstrated the poorest outcome. More than 20 percent of the participants in the group progressed to “class V.” They reportedly had worsened plaque constriction.

On the other hand, the participants treated with 100 milligrams (mg) of Pine bark extract and 100 mg of Gotu kola everyday showed better results. Experiencing only 1.1 percent of worsening constriction, the participants exhibited a whopping 95 percent lower plaque progression in comparison to the diet-and-exercise control group.

Furthermore, the scientists studied the effect of the combined natural remedies on plaque stability. This is an essential factor in preventing heart attacks and strokes. It was observed that taking 150 mg of pine bark and 225 mg of Gotu kola per day had beneficial effects on the density of plaque. Moreover, the remedial combination reduced the length, height, and number of plaques.

More about the Pine bark and Gotu kola

French pine bark has a common brand name called “Pycnogenol.” It is available in the form of capsules, liquid, and tablets. Natural health experts recommend you to take a high-quality formulation i.e. standardized to contain 85 to 90 percent oligomeric anthoprocyanidins (OPCs).

According to the experts, 50 to 100 mg of pine bark extract, thrice a day, can promote healthy circulation. Some studies suggest higher dosages of the extract as well.

Gotu kola extract is also available in the form of capsules, tablets, and tinctures. Moreover, the plant is also commonly available in dried form. It can be brewed into a calming tea.

Researchers suggest positive, heart-healthy results with the use of the extracts. However, they still suggest consulting a healthcare professional before taking these extracts, to treat atherosclerosis or other conditions.
