USA tops the table for highest number of meat eaters

The USA is really fond of food! It doesn’t matter what really is being eaten, an American would eat all. Now according to a new finding, the USA tops the table for the most meat consumption per capita.

Which really means that we are eating a lot of meat than other countries. The annual consumption stands at all time high compared to any other year in the past.

The Statistics

The USA has the highest number of meat consumers alongside Australia. The two countries are subsequently are followed by New Zealand and Argentina.

In fact, on average a US citizen would eat about 100kg of meat annually. This is equivalent to eating 50 chickens or half the entire cow!

The consumption is higher in Western countries than their Eastern counterpart. Needless to say, areas of Africa and some parts of Asia have the lowest consumption per person. Experts have attributed the lower figures in these countries to the prevailing poverty condition.

The lowest numbers were recorded in Ethiopia. On average, an Ethiopian would eat just 7kg of meat annually! Meaning by that an American eats 15 times more than the person living in that region. It is to say that in a lot of African regions, eating meat is something beyond a privilege. Only the rich elite of these countries are able to buy chicken or beef. Which also highlights the problem of protein deficiency among most of the natives.

Why the US eat more meat than other countries?

Experts associated with the study were in the process of evaluating all the possible reasons for the higher numbers. They felt that economics had a major role to play in that regard.

In the first instance, the USA has witnessed a rise in disposable income over the years which has raised living standards. More people are able to afford to buy unlike what would have been the case about a decade back.

The increase in income has also brought with it a rise in the demand for poultry products. Now more and more companies are selling meat based essentials to fulfil this surge in the consumer demand. With a large number of suppliers in the market, prices have lowered allowing for increased affordability.

Meat is being offered by restaurants and fast food chains that are present nearly in every other city. McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King are prominent examples. More people are inclined towards having chicken, beef or lamb than simply having vegetables.

On the other hand, meat consumption has also increased among the Muslim population in the USA. Halal meat is widely available in supermarkets, grocery stores etc. Along with that, a number of restaurants in the country would also cater to this Muslim audience by offering them Halal foods.

Lastly, the reason for the rise can also be understood in relation to an increased understanding of the importance of meat. Since it happens to be a potential source of protein, poultry becomes a vital component of our daily diet. More people now realize that excluding protein can have possible health consequences that need to be avoided.
