According to a recent health report, almost half of the US adult population is suffering from some sort of heart illness! Yes! That means every second person in the country.
The report was released and published by the American Heart Association. It was revealed that about 121 million US adults are suffering from heart disease.
This figure accounts for almost 50% of the total adult population living in the country. More importantly, the current stats have witnessed a sharp rise since the past 3 years. If no steps are taken then these numbers will continue to multiply in the future.
Experts associated with AHA have attributed the rise to two main factors.
- Lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle
- Changes in the blood pressure guidelines
The Association, in 2017, amended the calculability of hypertension which is a risk factor of heart disease. The blood pressure was set at 130/80. Which in a larger scheme of things have put millions of Americans at a greater risk of hypertension.
It is important to not exclude high blood pressure from any heart illness equation. It is one major contributor towards the condition.
These statistics are unfortunate and alarming at the same time. Thousands of Americans die every year due to a heart attack. In fact, heart illness is the number one cause of deaths in the USA. Just about last year, 840,000 people lost their lives due to this condition.
Lowering the risk
The figures should alarm everyone who should work on lowering the risk. Only through proper meaningful steps can we see a decline in the rates of infliction. The responsibility doesn’t just lie with the health department. It is pertinent for every single individual to take measures in the right direction.
There are essentially two ways of lowering the risk of heart disease. Mainly to focus on making dietary changes. Second, to be more physically active.
In the former case, it is important to consult a nutritionist who will jot down a right dietary plan for you. Reasonable to say, you should exclude excessive intake of fats and sugary items. Avoid fried and oily foods. They lead to weight gain which becomes a risk factor for heart disease. Try the new Mediterranean Diet which can yield beneficial results.
On the second level, try being more physically active. It is understandable that the busy job routine makes it difficult to extract out time. But there is more to lose than gain out of a sedentary lifestyle. Any type of exercise, from brisk walking to swimming will be healthy for you and your heart.
