Young people more likely to suffer from asthma than adults

Asthma has regarded as one common disease affecting thousands of people worldwide. Like for every other illness, asthma also has some risk factors. A certain type of population is more likely to be a victim than others.

The recent findings released by Asthma UK is a cause of concern for everybody. Particularly for the group into consideration. Now according to the findings, young people are at a far greater risk of asthma than any other age group. They are more likely to experience symptoms and the severity of the condition.

Moreover, the study also reveals that about 60% of the inflicted youth population would at some point need a medical emergency due to asthma.

What did the study suggest?

Asthma UK is a non-profit organisation working to create awareness about the condition. They recently conducted a detailed study on about 10,000 people of all age groups.

It was found that the young population is twice more likely to be a victim than adults. For the purpose of the study, the youth age limit was set between 18-29 years old.

From 750 replies received from the affected youth population, about two-thirds complained of not receiving proper medical care. They were devoid of basic health care techniques that included proper use of an asthma inhaler.

Moreover, in most cases, the patient would sideline the illness as being a mere cold cough. It is important to note that both of the conditions appear to be entirely different. Although they may have somewhat similar symptoms yet should not be considered as one thing.

Being excessively worried about the situation, the researchers also tried finding probable causes for the problem. They reviewed the interviews conducted on patients and documented the reasons.

In the first case scenario, most of the youth population did not attend Asthma review sessions. While they may be well aware of the condition yet did not make an attempt to review the symptoms at regular intervals.

Researchers also suggested that in a lot of the cases, the patient did not bother seeing a doctor. They were too involved in their own lives that forgot to book an appointment in the first place. This can be highly consequential as the symptoms may get severe in the near future.

What can be done about it?

Well, it is important to first acknowledge Asthma as a serious condition. It affects a large number of people particularly the young age group. Without a proper acknowledgement and realization, it would be difficult to take actions in the right regard.

Most importantly, it is pertinent to see a medical professional on regular basis. What people usually do is that they end up classifying asthma on the basis of just one mere symptom. Which also means that in the bigger picture they overlook the other associated signs of the illness.

It is important to understand that asthma is more than just “getting short of breath.” There is a long list of other symptoms which should not be overlooked.

The gist is that if you take proper care of yourself with regards to asthma, you can get a  proper hold of your condition.
