New York to legalize recreational weed in 2019

New York is all set to become the 11th state plus the federal capital Washington DC to legalize recreational weed. The decision came about when Governor Andrew Cuomo showed his full support for lifting the ban. Cuomo has explicitly stated that legalization of recreational marijuana is going to be his top priority.

It is important to note that New York allows the medical use of cannabis. However, recreational use has been decriminalized provided it’s not done in public.

Although no date has yet been announced, it is believed that cannabis can be legalized as early as the start of 2019. All adults over the age of 21 will be able to purchase weed for recreational purposes.

Cannabis in New York

This wasn’t the first time the legality issue of cannabis was brought by Governor Cuomo. He has talked about the problem before and asked for the legal regulation. Although, weed was available for medical purposes but only a small portion of the population had access to it.

There were several reasons to push for legalization for recreational usage.

Firstly, despite there being a ban, people continued using cannabis regardless. The criminalization did not curb the marijuana issue once and for all. By legalizing, the government can expect to regulate the market.

Buying and selling of weed were done in black with the state spending millions of dollars to enforce the ban. Now that problem can be actively solved and people can expect to buy recreational cannabis at their nearest herb store.

One other problem identified was that the weed available in the black market was of really poor quality. It was mixed with other harmful substances that could inflict the user with a number of complications. By legalizing, the state can also expect to regulate the quality of the product.

Lastly, needless to say, the marijuana industry could also be expected to yield billions of dollars as revenue for the economy.

Important Takeaway

The legalization can help solve all the problems that the criminalization had created. Apart from that, it is important to understand several health benefits of cannabis which medical studies have proven.

It can be of great medical advantage. Particularly people from chronic pain can find themselves relieved from the complications resulting from their condition. In addition, marijuana has also shown positive results in treating different types of cancer.

According to one latest study, long term usage is linked to a higher metabolic rate and lower chances of obesity.

Yet, one should not overlook the other side of all these arguments. While the CBD content may not have significant harm whatsoever, THC does. Cannabis with high THC content is linked with psychoactive behaviour. Which in the wider scheme of things mean that it can disrupt the normal functioning of the brain.

Further to that, excessive usage can also contribute to Cannabis Use Disorder. The condition can have symptoms like anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Either way, how the US government tackles most of these issues remain to be seen.
