Fertility rate has dropped in USA for seven consecutive years. Which means that Americans are having fewer babies than they normally did. USA stands at third in the list of top countries with the highest population. However, it is expected that other countries are going to surpass the US soon.
A study was conducted by Centres for Disease and Control Prevention. The purpose was to investigate the causes of the problem and provide the readers with a detailed insight. The findings paint somewhat a very unfortunate picture. The conclusion drawn was that: Americans are not reproducing enough to replace themselves.
The Population Problem
A number of South Asian and African countries are witnessing a sharp rise in their population growth. That can also be an issue since it can create problems like food shortage etc. As an imperative, it is important to keep the fertility rate at a moderate level. Meaning by, there are enough people in the future to replace the current population.
The CDC revealed the total fertility rate that needs to be maintained by any country. If the US population needs to replace itself then 2100 births per 1000 adult women every year is required.
Sadly, USA falls considerably short of the target. As per 2018, the rate remained at 1766 births per 1000 women. This is almost 15% less of what the country really needs to achieve. For states like Alaska, Wyoming and Montana, the situation happens to be even more unfortunate. These states have failed to even hit the national bench mark. Particularly, Montana could just manage to have a fertility rate of 68 births per 1000 women.
Considering the size of Montana, the rate happens to be extremely low. Which in the larger scheme of things demands the government to take necessary action.
This is the seventh time USA has witnessed a decline in the national fertility rate. The speed of decline comes only third to the Scandinavian countries.
Reasons For the Decline
Researchers are increasingly worried about the problem. Although no exact reason has been identified, experts have made few assumptions.
In the first case scenario, the bad US economy is to be blamed. The unemployment rate is on the rise. This combined with high inflation rate has only made the problem worse for the people. They choose to have fewer babies so the present members of the family can be fed.
The rise in education and medical fee have also made the US parents question their decision about having a baby.
In the other sense, the economy will worsen further due to low fertility rate. At this speed in the near future, the country will have a fewer workforce.
The wide access to contraceptive methods can also be a contributory factor. Now more people are aware of the birth control measures. They are widely available at drug stores at an affordable price.
In conclusion, the problem happens to be considerably serious that needs to be accounted for. If no appropriate measures are taken towards its solution, then it could create problems in the future.
