A combination of L-carnitine and Vitamin-E overcomes Immunosupression caused by toxins, says research

A study, from the Journal Toxicon, states that L-carnitine in combination with vitamin E can improve the immune system and its function.

The researchers of the study found that these two nutrients can overcome the immunosuppression caused by toxins like ochratoxin A. It is a fungus-based toxin that has reportedly suppressed the immune responses in mammals like birds.

The researcher of the study employed White Leghorn cockerel chicks for the study. They divided the chicks into three groups and exposed them to ochratoxin A.

One group of the birds was fed with either L-carnitine or vitamin E. However, the other group received the toxin with a combination of the two nutrients. In addition, a group served as placebo and received the toxin with none of the nutrients at all.

Ochratoxin A suppressed the birds’ immune response. However, the animals, receiving either of the nutrients or the combination of the two, exhibited significantly reduced levels of immunosuppression. Note that the animals exposed to a much higher dose of the toxin didn’t demonstrate this effect.

The study also demonstrated a reduction in the lesions caused by ochratoxin A in the birds given L-carnitine or vitamin E, or a combination of the two.

The results of the study conclude that L-carnitine and vitamin E, as food supplements, help to overcome immuno-suppression caused by ochratoxin A. The extent of the immune recovery proved that taking the two nutrients together is more beneficial than taking them separately.

L-carnitine is a common nutrient in the fat-burning dietary supplements. It helps to augment corporal energy reserves by transporting fat molecules to the mitochondria. Our body produces L-carnitine naturally from the amino acids Lysine and Methionine. However, it can also be obtained from foods like meat or fish. Vitamin-C is crucially required to produce L-carnitine.

On the other hand, vitamin E is abundant in nuts, such as almonds and hazelnuts, and seeds, including sunflower seeds. It can also be taken via supplements. Vitamin E is most famous for its skin benefits, but it has other benefits that are listed below.

Vitamin E protects against damage caused by UV rays. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation increases the risks of developing skin conditions like skin cancer. Vitamin E serves as a powerful antioxidant, protecting the skin from the effects of UV rays.

Vitamin E promotes a healthy heart. The antioxidant potential of vitamin E neutralizes the oxidative damage that harms the cells, including the cardiac cells. Vitamin E regulates blood pressure and promotes a healthier heart. Moreover, the oil of Vitamin E is associated with faster recovery of wounds.
