According to new research, you may want to divert your attention to Mediterranean diet instead. A big number of studies have already proved many advantages of following this specific diet. The new diet adds to the list of benefits of the Mediterranean diet by highlighting how it cuts down the risk of cardiovascular diseases greatly.
The study included researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the findings were published JAMA Network Open. The lead author of the study is Shafqat Ahmad, Ph.D.

How Mediterranean Diet Can Lower the Risk Of Heart Disease?
Mediterranean diet refers to the common diet of people from Spain, Greece, and Italy. Typically, the diet involves a lot of plants, veggies, and very little meat or sugary products. Before the new study, the diet was seen to show various benefits.
For example, research on the Mediterranean diet shows that it reduces the risk of various health issues, improves the digestive system and may even increase the lifespan in older adults. In addition, some studies suggest it may also cut down the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
The main focus of the new study was to find out the extent to which the Mediterranean diet helps with lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases. To do so, the team of researchers examined data from the Women’s Health Study.
The dietary habits and health of some 25,994 women were followed by the researchers for a period of around twelve years. These women were also divided into three groups depending on how strictly they followed a Mediterranean diet.
What Were the Results?
After the final observations, it was noted that around 4.2% of the women from the group which loosely followed a Mediterranean diet had a cardiovascular condition. 3.8% of the women in both the moderate and strict groups had a cardiovascular condition.
In addition to these findings, the researchers also looked at the metabolic data of the women. Conclusively, it was deduced that the diet is beneficial due to the way it reacted with factors like insulin resistance, inflammation, and glucose metabolism.
According to the researchers, further research is still required in this matter which includes more metabolic factors that may affect the diet. But it is no doubt that the diet is beneficial and can help with lowering the risk of various health conditions.
