A high calorie intake accelerates aging, science reports

A new study reveals that eating fewer calories directly impacts how long you live. Scientists say that decreasing calorie intake linearly augments your lifespan. The researchers from Colorado State University and Brigham Young University led the study. They analyzed the consequence of ribosomes (the protein makers of the cell) on the aging process. The respective study was printed in the Journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics.

The senior author of the study, John Price, and Brigham Young explained that the ribosomes are very complex corporal machinery which needs a systematic maintenance. Any fault in this machinery alters the expression of proteins and genes within our bodies. Defective ribosomes promote protein homeostasis, diseases, and aging. However, if the ribosomes work well, the body is able to fight ailments, and lifespan is amplified.

The researchers used two groups of mice to test the effects of calorie intake. They provided one group with unlimited access to food. However, the other group was served with all the daily required nutrients only. It is about 35 percent fewer calories per day.

The researchers then used protein mass spectrometry and stable-isotope feeding to assess the ribosomal proteins (r-proteins) of the mice and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). They inferred that the mice who take fewer calories had a slower ribosome production. It caused biochemical variations that factually slowed down the aging process. As a result, the mice on the calorie-restricted diet were less vulnerable to diseases, were more active, and had a longer lifespan.

However, simply controlling calories is not the solution to aging. It is really important to make every calorie count. We must eradicate processed and unhealthy foods known to hinder longevity.

Note that the study doesn’t mean that cutting down on calories can bring youth forever. However, it does mean that every calorie we munch needs to really count
