Why Shouldn’t You Take Antibiotics with Milk?

Antibiotics may interfere with food absorption most often and that is the reason to avoid certain foods at all costs. We take antibiotics to feel better and who don’t want to get better sooner?

Antibiotics, when taken with dairy products, may not work to improve your condition and therefore may go in waste. It is generally recommended to wait for at least 3 hours after taking antibiotics so you may consume milk or other dairy foods safely.

Why Do Dairy Foods Interfere with Medicines?

Dairy foods are rich in calcium which does not let the antibiotics absorb in the body effectively which leads to the ineffectiveness of medication. However, you may have whatever you like after 3 hours of taking the medicine which ensures there will be no interaction of medicines.

The calcium in dairy products combines with antibiotics which do not let them absorb into the bloodstream for their purpose. Even if half the medicine interacts with milk, you will be left with a half dose which is insufficient for treating your condition.

What are Different Dairy Products?

Dairy foods do not only include milk and yogurt but all the products made with them such as cheese, ice-cream, custard, or any other food containing milk in large quantity. Although food with a small amount of milk added will not interfere with the medicine.

How Do Antibiotics React with Milk?

Tetracyclines are the type of antibiotics known to interfere most with dairy products. The calcium in milk will combine with the medicine to stop its absorption into the bloodstream. This makes the antibiotic ineffective and prolongs your pain only because of the wrong food choice.

One should be really careful when taking antibiotics as they are high in intensity and react strongly to recover the immune system.

Other Foods that Interact with Antibiotics

There are other foods known to interact with antibiotics such as acidic foods, foods high in fiber, iron-rich foods and calcium-rich foods.

Acidic Foods

with high acidic content such as citrus fruits, carbonated drinks, tomato ketchup, and even chocolate can interfere with medications.

Dairy Foods

products will interfere because of the calcium content present in them although yogurt is believed to have good effects on the gut system. Yogurt acts as a probiotic which is good to take with antibiotics. The rest of the dairy products will not have a good effect with antibiotics as they stop their absorption in the blood.

Iron or Calcium Rich Supplements

Iron or calcium-rich supplements will have a negative effect when taken with antibiotics as they will not stop antibiotic absorption too.

Wait for three hours after taking any antibiotics and then consume whatever you want. Iron and calcium are known to interfere with many other medicines apart from antibiotics as they dampen the medicinal effect on the body. Large amounts of iron or calcium intake in foods or supplements will mix it with the foods taken with them.

This will make the nutrients in foods ineffective.

Fiber-Rich Foods

Fiber-rich foods are good to eat when you’re trying to lose weight as they will make you feel fuller for longer. This may not be good when taking antibiotics as this may interfere with how an antibiotic reacts with the system. High fiber is always a good choice but be wise to choose with antibiotics as this may be different than other conditions.

While there are sources which do not consider taking milk with antibiotics wrong, it is recommended to take precaution. The main antibiotics interfering with dairy are tetracycline, doxycycline, and ciprofloxacin. These drugs will lose potency to treat the condition and will have a dampened effect after calcium interference.
