Research reveals the antioxidant potential of Camu camu

Camu camu is a fruit of a riverside tree scientifically named as “Myrciaria dubia.” It is commonly found in the Amazon rain-forests in Peru and Brazil. The respective plant produces small cherry-like drupes called Camu camu. They are also popular as cacari or camocamo.

The major importer of Camu camu is Japan. The fruit is relatively easy to harvest. However, it is still not cultivated at a large-scale in other places except South America.

Owing to high nutritional content and amazing health-friendly capabilities, Camu camu is called one of the power fruits on planet earth. The berry is full of nutrients, especially Vitamin-C.

Research declares Camu camu, one of the best sources of obtaining vitamin-C

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a powerful nutrient for a living body. It can potentially boost your immune system and improve your overall health. Derek Henry, the founder of “Healing the Body” and creator of the “THRIVE Online Health Program”, states that Camu camu is one of the most potent sources of acquiring vitamin C.

A 100-gram serving of Camu camu provides at least 7.5 g of vitamin C. As compared to oranges, 100 g of Camu camu has 60 times more vitamin C. In comparison to bananas, Camu camu has 200 times more vitamin C per ounce. It also has 20 to 30 times more vitamin C per 100 g than the kiwi fruit.

Research reported the antioxidant potential of Camu camu juice on the blood cells of mice in 2012. The blood cells of mice after acute, sub-acute, and chronic treatments were evaluated for flavonoids and vitamin C. The amount of vitamin C per 100 mL of Camu camu was 52.5 mg. This research is published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It fights against the free radicals in our body. Free radicals are unstable atoms usually generated when your body encounters air pollution, harmful radiations, cigarette smoke, drugs, and pesticides. Sometimes, they also occur as by-products of normal metabolic processes.

Free radicals may cause degenerative diseases, exert oxidative stress, and accelerate the aging process in general. Vitamin C neutralizes the cellular damage caused by oxidative stress. The potential abilities of vitamin C include protection against,

  • Immune system deficiencies
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Prenatal health problems
  • Eye disease
  • Skin wrinkling

Vitamin C is a must-have, especially during the times when your immune system is challenged. For example, the transition from summer to fall, fall to winter, or winter to spring. This vitamin strengthens the immune system. Moreover, vitamin C fortifies the skin, bones, and teeth. It is a very versatile nutrient and can act as natural anti-histamine. Thus, it can help mitigate certain types of allergic reactions. Moreover, Ascorbic acid stimulates the production of white blood cells and collagen. It helps to repair and develop cells, tissues, and organs.

Vitamin C is available via different sources such as intravenous injections, supplements, and whole foods. Camu camu serves as one of the strongest sources of whole food vitamin C.

However, the antioxidant properties of Camu camu cannot be attributed to vitamin C solely. In order to validate the fact, a trial-based study was conducted by Japanese researchers. They recruited 20 male smokers. The subjects under observation were randomly divided into two groups.

  • The first group was fed with 70 milligrams of 100% Camu camu juice daily, corresponding to 1,050 milligrams of vitamin C.
  • The second group was instructed to take vitamin tablets containing an equal amount of vitamin C.

The results of the study revealed that the participants of the second group taking the vitamin C supplement didn’t demonstrate an improvement in their oxidative stress levels at the dose used in this 7-day trial. On contrary, the men in the Camu camu group exhibited a notable drop in several markers of oxidative stress.

The results of the study imply that the natural compounds other than vitamin C also contribute to the strong antioxidant properties of Camu camu.

Camu camu fights obesity

Another study published in the Journal Gut reports that the Camu camu fruit can potentially fight obesity and Type-II diabetes.

Camu camu packs a bundle of gut-friendly nutrients. Furthermore, it contains polyphenols and certain compounds that aid a healthy weight-loss, improving insulin resistance as well.

The researchers at the Universite Laval’s Faculty of Medicine in Canada carried out the respective study. They examined the benefits of Camu camu on the basis of experimental studies employing mice.
The mice, employed for the study, were divided into two groups.

  1. The control group
  2. The treatment group

Both of the groups were fed with a high-calorie, high-sugar diet for eight weeks. In addition, the treatment group received Camu camu extract every day throughout the study. However, the control group was kept deprived of the Camu camu juice.

The results of the trial revealed that the mice fed with Camu camu extract did not gain weight as much as the group that didn’t receive the extract. More specifically, the group treated with Camu camu gained 50 percent less weight than the control group.

Furthermore, the research team noted a significant improvement in insulin resistance, blood sugar levels, and gut inflammation in the test/treatment group. It was believed that Camu camu aids in weight loss because it boosts metabolism even during the resting periods.

Andre Marette, one of the lead researchers of the study, said that eating fruits is strongly linked with a better health and higher bacterial diversity in the gut microbiota. Camu camu is an Amazonian fruit and has a unique phytochemical profile, strong antioxidant potential, and purported anti-inflammatory potential.

Camu camu and its potential health benefits

Apart from its exceptional antioxidant potential and weight loss abilities, Camu camu brings a variety of other health benefits as well. It has gained the attention of many health-conscious consumers over a short period of time. It is easy to add Camu camu to your diet on a daily basis to boost your health.

Listed below are some extraordinary health benefactions offered by the fruit.

Camu-camu, which has amino acids, antioxidants, trace minerals, and vitamins,

  • Improves the aging process
  • Enhances mood and improves cognitive balance
  • Promotes a healthy nervous and reproductive system
  • Fortifies eye, gum, heart, and liver health
  • Supports healthy collagen, ligaments, and tendons

The respective fruit contains high amounts of Ellagic acid. It is a powerful natural compound that neutralizes cancer-causing substances and promotes apoptosis of cancerous cells. Thus, Camu camu is also said to possess anti-cancer properties.

Moreover, Camu camu is rich in flavonoids like anthocyanins. It also contains carotenoids such as Lutein. Lutein helps to prevent eye disorders like,

  • Cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Retinitis pigmentosa

Researchers advise to take Camu-camu supplements during the seasons of fatigue and sickness, so you can stay strong and healthy.
