How much physical activity do you need?

Fitness and Freebies New guidelines for Americans show how much physical fitness is needed on weekly basis to fit into the physically fit chamber. Adults need 150 to 300 minutes every week for moderate level exercise and 75 to 150 minutes for high-intensity exercises so as to remain fit.

Also, a combination of moderate and vigorous exercises helps keep the metabolic system at its best. The guidelines are basically there to tell an average American to move their body and increase their physical activity from what it is now.

The U.S department of health and human services has issued a second edition of physical activity guidelines which are not much different from the first one. So its if no use to think the guidelines must have said to remain inactive and become healthy.

What do Physical Activity Guidelines say?

 

The second edition of physical activity guidelines has made 3 new additions to the first edition of 2008 although the recommendations remain the same. The first addition adds up more information on the benefits of physical activity and risks associated with sedentary behavior. There has been more awareness about getting more active physically over the past decade however, people have stopped moving whatever they used to before.

The second guideline focuses on preschool children of ages 3 to 5 years old. The guidelines state that children should not stay inactive as this leads to obesity and health gets affected from early ages. The third additions say that it is no longer a stipulation for adults to engage in at least 10 minutes of exercise.

This will be useful for many adults who do not have time for the gym. Therefore they can be engaging in multiple sprints of physical activity which will make up for their daily requirement.

Physical Activity Guidelines for Different Age groups

A study suggests that physical activity depends on the age factor as people of different ages require different levels of exercises. Preschool children of ages 3 to 5 should remain physically active throughout the day and additional recommendations state that they should indulge in different forms of activities.

Children between 6 and 17 in age should have 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous level of activity every day whereas additions have been made with 3 days of intense level activity like muscle strengthening. Adults are recommended to workout 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity and 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity.

Now, additions have been made that muscle strengthening exercises should be done for at least 2 days of the week to involve all muscle groups. Older adults should be indulging to activities same as adults but they may tailor according to their capability. Additions have been made for older adults to have multi-component exercises including balance, aerobics, and muscle strengthening.

Physical Activity Statistics of Americans

There is no age group that is not covered in the Physical activity guidelines and therefore there is no excuse to escape from following recommended physical exercises from now. Although the statistics show that only 21% of adults meet the guidelines stated in the year 2008 and less than 3 out of every 10 children reach 60 minutes threshold of physical activity daily.
