The Relation Between Abortion and Depression- What does studies show?

Before we delve into whether abortion actually causes depression or not, let us first know the very common and basic definitions of what depression and abortion actually are? It is essential to know the common and basic depression definition because of the widespread misconception that it has attained.

Depression is a mental disorder which is, fortunately, a curable disease. However, it is essential to know the reasons for one’s depression in order to be fully aware of what one is going through. The symptoms of depression can vary. It can be mild or severe. It can be simply feelings of sadness or a loss of interest in the day to day activities.

This may also include the loss of appetite for gaining weight because of overeating. The feelings of worthlessness or guiltiness may increase unnecessarily. From getting difficulty in thinking to find it hard in concentrating, depression can make it extremely hard to make even the simplest of decisions. It can also make you prone to having suicidal thoughts.

One of the things about depression is that it doesn’t need a reason. It can appear from no-where or there could be a reason behind your depression. However, it is essential to know that these symptoms should last at least for more than two weeks before it can be diagnosed with depression.

Also, depression has its kinds:

1) Post-partum depression, also known as after-pregnancy depression.

2) Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

3) Psychotic Depression

4) Situational Depression

5) Bipolar Disorder

6) Persistent Depressive Disorder

7) Major Depression

These are the kinds of depression. Each has its own symptoms and causes. You have to figure it out yourself what sort of depression you really are in. Now comes our next question about “abortion”. What actually abortion is? To know about it, read the following:

What is Abortion?

Abortion is done when someone doesn’t want to have a child and doesn’t want to continue with her pregnancy. This is when abortion is done, which is also known as “terminating one’s pregnancy”.

Abortion is done via two means which a patient can choose as per her requirement.

1) Medical Abortion

This is done by giving pills to the patients. Abortion pills are given for up to 10 weeks or up to 24 weeks.

2) Surgical Abortion

In this kind of abortion, it is done via surgical means. As in through a quick operation of the patient. Surgical Abortion also has two types which include vacuum aspiration for 15 weeks or via dilatation and evacuation which is done in 15-24 weeks.

Here comes the actual question now:

Does Abortion cause depression or not?

There are studies which are both pro and anti pro of depression. Some studies show that antidepressants are less likely to be taken by those who abort than those who don’t abort. However, there are chances that women who had an abortion earlier could face some emotional problems. Danish Medical Research Council and Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation state that having an abortion doesn’t actually result in a depression.

The studies from American Psychological Association shows that there are no threats to women’s mental health if she aborts a baby.

Another research says that there are chances that women who are convinced to get aborted or in other words, if women face induced abortion, then they are likely to face depression, which may also include a number of other health problems such as anxiety, sleep problems, suicidal ideation or other such symptoms.

It is important to note, however, that the latest studies show that abortion doesn’t have any connection with the depression or other psychological health problems.
