A Sore throat is one of the common outcomes of colder months of the year. It comes with swelling, irritation, and inflammation of the throat caused due to certain microbes that infect the windpipe and promote infection.
Honey is a sweet viscous liquid that finds extensive uses in treating a sore throat naturally. Following are some easily accessible home-based remedies for a sore throat employing honey coupled with other natural components.
Honey and Water
Raw honey mixed with the lukewarm water helps to pacify a sore throat. You can drink it twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, for the best results.
Honey and Milk
Milk soothes the itchy abrasions in a sore throat. However, it thickens the phlegm thus it should be consumed in a controlled quantity.
Add a tablespoon of honey in a cup of warm milk. Add a pinch of turmeric. Mix it well and drink it before going to bed. Turmeric combats the bacteria causing sore throat because it’s antiseptic and antimicrobial in nature. Turmeric can also be consumed with warm water and lemon juice to treat a sore throat.
It constitutes a tablespoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper in hot water. Drinking this tea before going to bed will relieve a sore throat.
Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar kills germs and bacteria and covers the throat lining with a protective layer. Mix 1 tablespoon of raw honey and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in warm water and drink it.
Honey and Garlic
Garlic clears out the mucus formed in the throat because it contains organo-sulfur compounds which help to kill and remove bacteria causing soreness. Grind 3 cloves of garlic and mix it with raw honey. Keep the mixture overnight. Add warm water to it, stir well and consume.
Honey, Lemon and Ginger’s Blend
Lemon consisting of citric acid is very effective against bacteria causing throat infections. It constitutes crucial vitamins that strengthen the immune system. Ginger, on the other hand, contains anti-inflammatory gingerols and shaogals that help to combat rhinoviruses, the cause of a sore throat in the first place.

Honey and Orange Juice
Orange being a citrus fruit works best for cold, cough or a sore throat. Vitamin C present in orange juice helps to reduce the microbial load causing a sore throat. Boil a glass of orange juice and add about a tablespoon of honey to it and consume it.
Honey and Cinnamon
Cinnamon is anti-inflammatory in nature. It releases the mucus and lessens the swelling and inflammation. Add cinnamon powder and ground ginger in a cup of warm milk. Add about a ½ tablespoon of honey and drink the mixture until throat clears.
Honey and Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper blocks the pain signals being sent to the brain. Take 1 teaspoon of honey and mix a pinch of cayenne pepper oil. Swallow whenever the pain in the throat is unbearable. This Cayenne and Honey mixture must not be given to children below 1 year.
Manuka Honey for Sore Throat
Manuka is a bush in New Zealand and Australia. When the bees pollinate the respective bush they give Manuka honey. Active Manuka honey is a rich source of anti-oxidants. It is 4 times more nutritional than the ordinary honey. The antibacterial properties of Manuka honey help to destroy the virus and bacteria that cause a sore throat and cough.
1 teaspoon of Manuka honey in warm water along with lemon juice provides an effective remedy against a sore throat.
