Excessive Use of Cell Phone Or Social Accounts Can Lead Teens Having Symptoms of ADHD

Previously, we had discussed how ADHD can affect a child’s overall performance. ADHD can have drastic effects upon the personality of anyone who’s going through the symptoms of it. Earlier, we had discussed the symptoms of ADHD and that ADHD not only effects the personality of a person, in fact, it can lead a person towards the danger zone where a person can become an addict of substance abuse just because of being vulnerable to ADHD symptoms.

Because the Inattentive, hyperactive or impulsive behavior of the people who are the victim of ADHD, this can also cause people to become vulnerable to another kind of chronic addictions or illnesses.

There’s another report that had been conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) which says that there are chances that people who are addictive of cell phone usage, to develop symptoms of ADHD. ADHD, as it is said, involves a number of things which can disturb a person’s personal and professional life. It includes getting distracted easily, taking abrupt decisions meaning not thinking of the future results, forgetting things easily or having difficulty in remaining organized.

It is reported that students/juveniles who get addictive to their phones, can actually become attention seekers and can start lacking attention or focus of the tasks that require their whole attention.

Some of the California Researchers did a research on approximately 2500 students who were enrolled in a high school. And before the initiation of the study, it was made sure that these juveniles were not diagnosed with the signs and symptoms of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (also known as ADHD).

Some common questions with regards to the activity of these students were asked on their phones. The scale that was set for this purpose was that they could answer the questions by replying either “never” or “many times a day”.

  1. How often did they check their social media?
  2. How often did they text?
  3. How many times in a day did they watch online videos or viewed images etc?
  4. How much did they hear music or downloaded it?
  5. For how long did these individuals chat online?
  6. Did they ever play games alone? If yes then for how much time?
  7. How often did these students play games with others?
  8. How many posts did they do on their social accounts?
  9. How many times did they share the posts of others?
  10. How much did of the blogs did they read online?
  11. What time did they spend on video chatting?
  12. How much time did they spent on doing online shopping or even browsing?
  13. How many movies did they watch?
  14. How much time did they spend on commenting on other people’s posts?

The researchers kept checking these 2500 individuals on an interval basis and checked the status of their activities on phone or social media and tried matching it with the symptoms of ADHD whether they developed any or not.

The report, in the end, suggested that approximately 4.6% of the individuals who weren’t using digital media for a high time reported having symptoms of ADHD.

4.6% reached 9.5% in those individuals who reported to have symptoms of ADHD and spent high time on at least seven of the activities mentioned above.

The number reached 10.5% in those individuals who spent much of their time in all the 14 activities and thus developed symptoms of ADHD as a consequence.

Although, researchers say that these were only the symptoms which these juveniles showed of ADHD and this doesn’t necessarily mean having the ADHD in itself. However, it is still advised that even the symptoms should not be neglected and the online activities of teens or young people should be monitored so that they don’t become vulnerable to ADHD.
